Shimoni Slave Caves: Visiting Kenya’s Historical Coastal Caverns
Before boarding your boat to Wasini Island, a stop at Shimoni village reveals deep historical significance inside the underground Shimoni Slave Caves.
Geological Formation of the Caverns
Shimoni means "Place of the Hole" in Kiswahili. The natural subterranean caves extend over 5 kilometers inland, sculpted by ancient tidal movements into coral limestone.
History During the Maritime Slave Trade
In the 18th and 19th centuries, slave traders utilized these dark, concealed chambers as holding pens for enslaved captives from the Kenyan interior before shipping them to Zanzibar.
Community Conservation Today
The caves are now conserved by the local Shimoni community. Local guides take visitors safely through illuminated wooden boardwalks and iron-chain relics to preserve this historical memory.
